A typical revenge film with a bit of a twist, Cold Pursuit has Liam Neeson as snow-plow driver Nels Coxman tracking down the thugs and drug dealers responsible for his innocent son. He kills them one-by-one, feeling no guilt for his actions, as he climbs up the food chain. reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino, there’s a dark humor running through the proceedings. Norwegian director Hans Petter Molland has delivered a strangely entertaining elegy to violence and the mob.
Adapted by Molland from his own 2014 film In Order of Disappearance, he and co-writer Frank Baldwin have injected loads of fun amid the action. Nels discovers that his late son was targeted by a drug kingpin named Viking (Tom Bateman). Nels starts killing people in his gang, determined to get to the top of the food chain. One by one, the thugs die violent deaths; each one is listed on the screen by colorful nicknames such as Santa, Speedo, Limbo, Smoke, Bone, etc. As the bodies pile up, Neeson’s scenes with Viking’s sensitive young son, Ryan (Nicholas Holmes), adds some warmth to the proceedings.
It’s hardly a spoiler, but so many people die, in so many different ways in Cold Pursuit, it’s laughable. The whole thing is so contrived, it’s fun. Is this Liam Neeson’s best acting effort? Not by a long shot. But I read not too long ago that he said Cold Pursuit would be his last action film. If that’s the case, it looks like Liam had fun making this one, and fans of his action films should enjoy.
Cold Pursuit hits 4K with and HDR transfer and a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. Shot largely outside during the day, colors are bright throughout. Snow is a constant, but the white never blooms and the blacks are deep and inky. The overall color palette for the film consists of cool, bright colors. The color saturation looks appropriate, adding to an already excellent image. The sense of depth and shadow delineation seems on part with other new 4K titles of this genre. Edge details are crisp, and no film grain is apparent.
Cold Pursuit is outfitted with a Dolby Atmos track, though the movie itself doesn’t have a lot of scenes that take full advantage of it. Dynamic movement and overhead effects are limited, what’s there is well placed, accurate and enveloping. The music is balanced out well with the dialogue and atmospherics. Dialogue is clean, clear and concise throughout.
English SDH and Spanish subtitles are included.
