iZombie recently began its second season on the CW, but for those who just discovered the series, the first season is available on DVD so you can catch up. Olivia Moore (Rose McIver), is a Seattle medical student who generally prefers hanging out with her fiancé Major Lilywhite (Robert Buckley), to socializing with her colleagues. The one time she does decide to go out to a party, Olivia finds herself attacked by a horde of zombies. One of them scratches her, infecting her. Instead of simply becoming a mindless zombie, Olivia discovers she can ward off deterioration by consuming human brains.

It’s all a tad grotesque, but this discovery allows her to maintain some sense of normality in her life. As difficult as it is, Olivia knows she must make significant changes in her life to survive. She breaks off her engagement and takes a job at the local police morgue, which will give her access to all the human brains she needs to prevent turning into a zombie. She also learns that human brain consumption makes her able to absorb the memories and quirks of their owners.

It’s not long before Olivia’s boss at the morgue, Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti (Rahul Kohli) figures out her zombie status and realizes that she can be a real asset in helping with detective work. From there, she is paired with homicide detective Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin) and they begin solving cases in a decidedly unique manner.

Presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, Warner Bros. has provided a strong standard definition transfer. Colors are strong and vibrant throughout, while skin tones are appropriate to the character(s). Contrast is appropriately varied and black levels controlled.

The 5.1 Dolby Digital track delivers clean and clear dialogue throughout. Drills, blades and various tools in the lab come through nicely. There isn’t much in the way of fidelity in evidence, but it isn’t necessary here.

English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Thai subtitles are included.

The following extras are available:

  • Deleted Scenes: Spread across the three discs, they can be found on episodes 1, 2, 5, 9, 12, and 13.
  • iZombie Comic Con Panel (28:58) A Q&A with the cast and crew at the 2014 San Diego Comic Con. They cover a lot of ground from how they got their parts, to the differences between the comic and the series.
