Given the chance to rectify that with Mill Creek’s release of the entire series on Blu-ray, I quickly realized Community was a real gem. Sure, there are some bumps over six seasons and 110 episodes, but Dan Harmon (Rick and Morty) created a show with relatable characters in humorous situations.

Cocky but lovable Jeff Winger (McHale) is disbarred when it’s discovered his degree from “Columbia University” isn’t as advertised Forced back into academia, he heads to Greendale Community College, outsized ego intact. Soon after arriving, Jeff spots pretty, blonde activist Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs). Hoping to get closer to her, he claims to be starting a Spanish study group. Would she like to join him later in the library? Jeff’s plans for some alone time with Britta are dashed when she shows up to the “study group” with film student and pop culture nerd Abed Nadir (Danny Pudi), who in turn, brings along some friends from Spanish class–Shirley Bennett (Yvette Nicole Brown, (500) Days of Summer) a Christian, single mother of two, overachiever Annie Edison (Alison Brie), former high school quarterback Troy Barnes (Donald Glover, The Muppets) and retired misogynistic millionaire Pierce Hawthorne (Chase). When Jeff’s plan to pass all his classes by getting all the test answers from a former client Professor Ian Duncan (John Oliver) falls through, he finds himself in real need of the study group.

Joel McHale’s character is a too one dimensional to carry the series, thankfully, though, Community is more an ensemble piece, with each actor contributing comedic assets. The early seasons make you wonder why Chevy Chase hasn’t been in movies for more the twenty-five years. He’s still a master at delivering a line amid chaos. Also joining in on the hijinks is Ken Jeong (The Hangover) as the unhinged Señor Chang, who it turns out isn’t who he initially seems to be. Danny Pudi’s Abed and Donald Glover’s Troy are naturally funny together, and the series really hit its stride when the duo were given more screen time midway through the first season.

Alison Brie’s Annie gives the show its heart. Brie emphasizes her characters youthful eagerness and finds a counterpart in Gillian Jacobs’ jaded Britta. Meanwhile, Shirley Bennett turns what could have been a stereotypical afterthought–a deeply religious black woman–into a fully formed character who gives as good as she gets. The acting on Community is fantastic.

Previously released by Sony on DVD, this is the first time the series has been on Blu-ray. Presented in the 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the image is clean with no obvious blemishes throughout. Flesh tones appear smooth and natural, while the color palette is well balanced and vibrant. This transfer seems like a fair replication of what you should expect from a series of such recent vintage.

Likewise, the DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack serves the material quite well. There’s some directional effects where necessary, but otherwise this show is all about the dialogue. In that case, dialogue is clean, clear and concise throughout. English SDH subtitles are included.

All of the extras have been ported over from the original DVD release:
